Movie Review: Assassinâs Creed

This post was originally published on this site

Movie Review: Assassin’s Creed

Cast: Michael Fassbender, Marion Coiitlard and Jeremy Irons

Rating: 1 star

Quick take: Absurdly bad!

There are two perspectives to Assassin’s Creed the film. One’s from the view point and experience of a gamer, who’s played the original game and it’s many sequels through the last decade. The other is from the casual movie buff who may or may not be influenced by the game’s history. If you watch the film from the first perspective, years of experience at dealing with Assassin’s Creed’s non-linear timelines and warped sci-fi / fantasy / historical presentation seems authentic enough. But it all goes down the drain when the movie just doesn’t care enough to be intelligent. From the second, more casual perspective, Assassin’s Creed the movie just does not make any sense at all. If the viewer of this film is the average joe who thinks Michael Fassbender could be the future of Hollywood stardom, then this unsuspecting viewer can only give one reaction to the film… WTF!

The new Assassin’s Creed film seems promising because it features Michael Fassbender in the lead. His career has been moving in the right direction ever since he was cast as Magneto a few years ago, in X Men First Class. When Mr Fassbender appears on screen you expect the film to carry a level of emotional and cinematic intelligence. You expect the actor to deliver an intense and yet finely nuanced performance. Sadly, the new Assassin’s Creed movie doesn’t deliver any of that. In fact, this film turns out to be so clichéd and formula driven that sometimes you feel you’re watching a rehash / medley of Prince Of Persia: Sands of Time and Clash Of The Titans. In this movie, Fassbender plays a regular 21st century guy who’s stealthily abducted from his death execution bed and installed into a fancy simulation machine that takes you back to 15th century Spain. Dead man put into a death machine for the vested interests of a corrupt organization that has ulterior motives of world domination. Shoddy sci-fi’s poster boy Sam Worthington’s favourite plot device is put to use in another Hollywood film. Sadly enough, such good actors like Fassbender, Marion Cottilard and Jeremy Irons are reduced to behaving like pseudo-intense Christopher Nolan characters who just don’t have enough character background pages on a 30-page film script. Fassbender is Callum in modern day and Aguilar in the Renaissance period. The actor looks clueless in both iterations of his role.

There’s a lot of parkour inspired action in Assassin’s Creed. Kind of like XXX’s Vin Diesel donning a Monk’s cowl and beating the shit out of random folks back in 15th century Spain. While Michael Fassbender does look good in these action sequences, the film script doesn’t bothering explain why these assassins with super human abilities can behave like they’re inside The Matrix. If someone can run from one tight rope to the other like it were a track and field pitch, there has to be some reason for the suspension of laws of physics. Forget that, the writers don’t even bother explaining why random strangers who have never met before, can suddenly band together like lost brothers and fight to their death. But that’s exactly what happens with Fassbender’s Callum and his unlikely posse of co-prisoners played by Michael K Williams, Michelle Lin and others. They suddenly form an Avengers sort of alliance to fight off a corrupt Illuminati organization.

Assassin’s Creed is a loud, preposterous and extremely pretentious action movie. If you sir through this 2-hour sci-fi cum historical ride, you’ll feel this strong sense of listlessness. As if you just sat through a History lecture in college while under the influence of psychedelic drugs. Kind of like a bad acid trip.

Filmfare Flashback 2016: Newsmakers of the year!

The dictionary prosaically describes newsmakers as people who make news, thus taking the fun and poetry away from people whose lives we love to devour as we sip our morning tea. We might not know the contents of our own bank accounts (we now do know thanks to demonetisation) but we sure like to discuss how many zeroes are there in the

33 million USD, which SRK supposedly earned. We might not be majorly into sports but Salman Khan’s and Sushant Singh Rajput’s antics in Sultan and MS Dhoni: The Untold Story respectively get our pulse soaring. Read about them and all other newsmakers in our year ender….

2016, the Year of break ups?

Cupid may have been busy in 2016, but he definitely needs to source better arrows for the next year. Because his love thrusts lost a lot of steam in the year gone by. Half-a-dozen celebrities called it quits in a year that seems disastrous for romance. Decades long marriages came to a grinding halt and even young love like that of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli as well as Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande saw troubled times. And then there was the master romantic tragedy between Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif that just blew all the love out of 2016. Our hearts broken and shattered so many times, we take a sombre look back at all the heartbreaks in a forgettable year for love.

Rajkumar Rao talks about love betrayal and love etters

Rajkumar Rao talks about love, betrayal and love etters

Rajkummar Rao has just finished shooting for Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s Bareilly Ki Barfi (BKB) in Lucknow and has returned to the maximum city with fine memories of the small-town. “The film is in the Tanu Weds Manu space. It’s a dramedy. The characters are funny and serious at the same time. There is love conflict in the film between Kriti (Sanon), Ayushmann (Khurrana) and my character. It’s a three-sided love with lovely moments,” says Rajkummar of the film produced by Junglee Pictures and BR Studios. “The dialect is a mix of khadi boli (pure Hindustani) and a conversational language used in Lucknow and Bareilly. My character has shades – he’s two guys in one,” he smiles.

Rajkummar would be romancing the beautiful Kriti in the film. But will he get her or will it turn out to be a story of one-sided love? “I’ve been in a one-sided love with Penelope Cruz since childhood,” he laughs ducking the question. “When I was in class seven I used to like this girl. She was my partner in one of the dance performances in school. Then she shifted to some other place. But where BKB is concerned I can’t reveal much,” he grins. The seemingly reticent Rao, it seems, was quite a headturner in school. “I was a popular guy. I was a gold medallist in martial arts at the national level. I was also into dance, acting, athletics,” he shares. “In fact, girls used to write letters in blood to me. I was in a relationship when I was in the last year of school… a chitthiyonwala love,” he recollects.

Karan Johar is like a second dad to Aryan Khan

This post was originally published on this site

Karan Johar is like a second dad to Aryan Khan

We very well know the kind of equation Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan share. The same goes for Kjo’s equation with SRK’s kids, Aryan, and AbRam. The filmmaker had mentioned in an interview that if Aryan ever debuts in Bollywood, Karan and only Karan will launch him.

During an interaction with a popular daily, the ace filmmaker was asked about the same again. To which he replied, “Aryan is my godchild. Currently, he is in Los Angeles and he has four years of university ahead of him. When he comes back he is going to decide if he wants to be in the movies. And if he does, of course, I will be a big part of it as a director or just as a guiding support. For me, Aryan being launched is like my son being launched. I will be this hyper relative breathing down his neck.”

Aryan is all grown up with six-packs and looks all set to enter filmdom but Karan still feels there is time for his debut. “I feel so proud. Of course, I track him all the time. When I see any images of him online, he gets messages from me in the middle of the night. I ask him, ‘What are you doing, who is this person with you in the frame?’ I feel like a possessive parent who wants to know exactly what he is up to,” he reveals.

When he was further asked if he has ever imagined the father-son duo SRK-Aryan in the same frame, he stated, “I think SRK and Aryan will be totally dynamic in the same frame, as they are great with each other. I have spent so much time with them and seen the relationship they share.”

We can’t wait for all of this to come true.
