Amazon outage breaks large parts of the internet

If your favorite website or internet service isn’t accessible today, it’s probably not just you. Amazon Web Services’ S3 cloud storage is experiencing “high error rates” that have caused chaos among many of the sites that depend on AWS to work. Our own website is one of them, but the failure has also affected some or all of Giphy, Medium, Slack, Quora and a slew of other websites and apps you likely use. Some connected home devices aren’t working correctly, either. Even Amazon’s ability to report problems was broken for a while — the AWS dashboard wasn’t changing color because its issue was “related” to S3’s problems.

Amazon hasn’t explained exactly what went wrong or offered an estimated time of repair, although its status page has narrowed the outage down to a North Virginia location. We’ve asked Amazon for more info and will let you know if it can share additional details.

No matter what’s at fault or how long the outage goes on, the incident underscores a mounting problem: an increasing dependence on a handful of services to power large swaths of the internet. AWS and its rivals make cloud features viable for companies that can’t always afford to run their own servers, but they also increase the chances that a failure will affect many people. Unless the tech industry can find a way to diversify its online data sources, these internet-wide crises aren’t going away any time soon.

When Swara refused to play SRKâs mother

When Swara refused to play SRK’s mother

Like most actresses, Swara Bhaskar too is a diehard fan of Shah Rukh Khan and holds a secret desire to have him serenade her on screen. So when Swara came to know that Aanand L Rai was making a film with SRK, she dared to try her luck only to her dismay. In an exclusive chat with Filmfare, Swara revealed, “I love Shah Rukh Khan. I have grown up watching his films. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge actually ruined my life.” She went on to narrate, “I told Shah Rukh sir in the presence of Aanand sir to please ask him to cast me in his film with him.” But the spunky actor was quick to lay down a condition. She didn’t want to play the superstar’s ‘sister’ or ‘daughter’. But the director threw a shocker her way. “Aanandji said, ‘Beta, I can only offer you his mother’s role!’ I was like this is the worst conversation I’ve ever had,” laughs Swara at the outrageous memory. That she was utterly devastated to have her dreams bite dust is only natural. Reportedly, the film has SRK paired with Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone.

FCC chairman Ajit Pai calls net neutrality a 'mistake'

New FCC chairman Ajit Pai has made his views on net neutrality clear in the past: He’s against it. But today at Mobile World Congress, Pai gave a wide-ranging speech in which he made his most pointed comments against net neutrality since taking over as chairman. When discussing the rules put into place in early 2015, Pai said they were “a mistake” and praised “light touch” internet regulation — something that’s sure to be on the FCC’s agenda going forward.

Pai also said that the new approach “injected tremendous uncertainty” into the broadband marketplace and made mention of the fact that the country saw its first-ever decline in broadband investment (outside of a recession) under the laws put into place in 2015. But, he thinks his leadership will turn that around.

“Today, the torch at the FCC has been passed to a new generation, dedicated to renewal as well as change,” Pai said. “We are confident in the decades-long, cross-party consensus on light-touch Internet regulation — one that helped America’s digital economy thrive. And we are on track to returning to that successful approach.” How exactly the FCC is “on track” to return to the times before net neutrality remains unclear, but we’ll certainly be watching to see how the agency plans to take us back.

Pai also pointed to the FCC’s decision to stop investigating “zero-rating” plans (which give consumers access to select services on various wireless or broadband providers without it affecting any data caps) as evidence that a new, hands-off approach would be better. That’s because in the weeks following that decision, both Verizon and AT&T brought back unlimited data plans after not widely offering them to customers for years.

Free-data plans have proven to be popular among consumers, particularly those with low incomes, because they allow consumers to enjoy content without data limits or charges. They have also enhanced competition,” Pai said. “Nonetheless, the FCC had put these plans under the regulatory microscope… But the truth is that consumers like getting something for free, and they want their providers to compete by introducing innovative offerings. Our recent decision simply respected consumers’ preference.”

The connection between the end of the zero-rating investigation and the introduction of unlimited plans seems to be little more than timing, however. Unlimited data has been a competitive advantage that T-Mobile (and to a lesser extent Sprint) have enjoyed over Verizon and AT&T for a while now, and there’s evidence that it was beginning to hurt Verizon’s bottom line. Verizon and AT&T would have been free to bring back unlimited data regardless of whether or not the FCC investigated zero-rating plans.

But Pai continues to paint a picture of net neutrality rules that classify the internet as a utility as a backwards approach. “Rules developed to tame a 1930s monopoly were imported into the 21st century to regulate the internet,” Pai said while also calling the net neutrality ruling a “last-century” bit of regulation. It’s still early days for Pai’s leadership over the FCC, but it sounds like it won’t be long before we find out how he plans to roll back the protections put in place in 2015.

Chirpy actress hugged someone and invited trouble!
Here’s an interesting piece of goss we came across. Who do you think this gal is?
Our actors groom their bodies to perfection, but a crash course in etiquette is hugely needed too. An overly bubbly female actor (honestly, we’re going to offer her a tranquilizer next time we see her) recently attended an event organized by the police.
Our lady walked up to a senior sleuth and hugged him, not paying heed to the formal namastes the others were offering. The gent could barely contain himself, and asked her not to behave in this manner in public. To which missy just giggled and pirouetted off.
Well, in her defense, it’s complete OKAY to show some affection. That’s our say, what’s yours?

Ranbir Kapoor is going to get a tattoo
Leaked pictures (hyperlink) from the sets of the Dutt biopic are proof that Ranbir Kapoor is giving his all to the film. The latest buzz is that RK has now decided to get the exact tattoos that Sanjay Dutt has.
A source tells a leading daily, “Ranbir has put in a lot of effort to adopt Dutt’s gait and body language, which was difficult. The latter had provided around 200 hours of footage of him walking to make the job easier. While Ranbir is currently shooting for the portions where Dutt is young, the team has started putting together all that they need to figure out for the other schedule, which will show Ranbir play a much older Dutt. Everyone knows that Dutt has a lot of tattoos on his body, so Ranbir is now contemplating getting them on his body as well. The tattoos are so intricate that Ranbir will have to sit down with the original tattoo artist to get a similar look.”
The filming of this biopic began in mid-January and will wrap up by June so the post-production can begin in full flow for its December release.
For those who aren’t aware of the casting, the film stars Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt, Manisha Koirala as Nargis Dutt,  Dia Mirza as Manyata, Sonam Kapoor plays a character based on all the women he has loved, Vicky Kaushal as baba’s close pal and Anushka Sharma as a journalist.
