Movie Review: Do Lafzon Ki Kahani

Movie Review: Do Lafzon Ki Kahani

Director: Deepak Tijori

Cast: Randeep Hooda, Kajal Aggarwal

Randeep Hooda is one of the finest actors in the country right now. He has all the talent in the world, a great body and he’s riding a popularity wave. Do Lafzon Ki Kahani is his 3rd release this year, with a supporting role in Salman Khan’s Sultan also in the offing. But like all good actors around the world, his movies don’t always do justice to his talent. Unfortunately, Do Lafzon Ki Kahani takes him into the realm of it’s so bad, it’s good. He’s a veritable star, a great performer, he has acting chops like none other, but he’s reduced to pointless 80s drivel in this romantic saga. His charisma is stifled by the blatant use of formula. Yet, amidst all the mediocrity, Hooda manages to add some level of respect to an otherwise embarrassing project.

This film is an adaptation of the Korean movie Always. The story deals with an MMA fighter named Suraj who’s turned to dark times and is recuperating from a life of crime. His life changes when he accidentally meets a blind girl named Jenny. They fall in love and that becomes the base for their run-of-the-mill romance. While the concept sounds great in theory, thr execution is so jaded you’ll feel the theatre is some sort of time travelling machine, teleporting you back to the world of ’70s and ’80s garish plots. It’s got stuff like the hero serving a sentence in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Random bad guy trying to rape girl and hero saving the day. Hero resorting to desperate life-threatening circumstances just so he can earn 3 lakhs so his girl can get cornea transplant. The list of ludicrous plots just goes on and on. After a point, the film becomes so over the top that you start laughing at the film.

In all honesty, if you’re one of those folks who enjoy passing comments and laughing at the expense of a movie, you’ll enjoy Do Lafzo Ki Kahani beyond measure. Moments like Kajal Aggarwal’s character having Malay-looking parents and her seedy boss getting touchy and feely will have you rolling on the floor. There’s also a scene with a saree-clad hot woman pulling down her pallu to reveal her bosom, offering herself to Suraj so he can let her husband win an MMA fight. This movie makes Humshakals seem like tame affair.

The music on offer has a ’90s hangover too. The entire package of Do Lafzon Ki Kahani is like a conditioning programme intended to take you back to all the shitty Hindi films you’ve seen in the past. It’s all set in Malayasia and that just adds to the surreal randomness of the movie.

Kajal Aggarwal plays Jenny the blind girl with a happy-go-lucky spirit. She looks great, she acts well but despite her best efforts the wooden characterisation and script let her efforts down. She’s done a great job playing a blind person. She’s also good in the romantic and comedy portions where she’s obsessed with a Indian TV soap opera. Randeep Hooda as the silent, brooding and intense Suraj is fantastic. If you’ve ever had a crush on the man, Do Lafzon Ki Kahani offers you enough topless, salacious images of Hooda to ogle at. His MMA fights are intense but clearly not choreographed in the best way. Both Hooda and his opponents get air borne in a caged-ring a little too often. The movie also features Mamik Singh, the actor who’d played Aamir Khan’s elder brother in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. The idea that Mamik and Deepak Tijori worked on the same film just sounds cool in a nostalgic way.

Coming back, the quality of cinema on offer in Do Lafzon Ki Kahani is abysmal. Despite a good lead pair the movie makes a complete meal out of its subject. Movies that qualify for the so-bad-it’s-good genre are fun, but that’s definitely not a compliment. You can watch this just to get your fill of Randeep Hooda goodness.

TE3N and Do Lafzon Ki Kahaani start slow at the box-office

In a three-way box-office face off, crime thriller T3EN, romantic drama Do Lafzon Ki Kahaani and Hollywood horror flick The Conjuring 2 take screens together this Friday.

Despite the massive star cast, rave reviews and publicity, TE3N managed an opening of 15 per cent occupancies in theatres in the early shows today. Released in 1150 screens pan-India and 325 screens overseas, the film is likely to see footfalls in the evening shows, with a projected total of Rs 3 crore in earnings by the end of day one.

Do Lafzon Ki Kahaani faced a mightier struggle as it received a mere 5 per cent in occupancies. While Randeep Hooda’s popularity is a huge plus for the film, earnings are not likely to cross Rs 1 crore at this rate.

The battle of the early opening figures was won hands down by The Conjuring 2. Garnering occupancies of 40 per cent in the day, evening shows are likely to produce better results, with a possible figure of Rs 5 crore on the charts by the end of the day.

Last week’s big release, Housefull 3 capitalised on its popularity over the first weekend right through the first week. After earning a massive Rs 53.31 crore at the end of the first weekend, the film held well on Monday, with a drop of less than 50 per cent, earning Rs 8.30 crore. Slipping figures of Rs 7.07 crore, Rs 6.25 crore and Rs 5.22 crore were witnessed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively. So far, Housefull 3 has managed to earn Rs 80.10 crore domestically. Adding a further Rs 26.77 crore from overseas earnings, the film’s grand total now stands at Rs 106.87 crore. What’s more, the film has earned the second highest opening week figures of the year so far, beaten only by Airlift, which earned Rs 83.50 crore. If the trend of high earnings holds, the film is likely to cross the 100-crore mark by the end of the second weekend, which is superb.

Arjun Kapoor works out for Half Girlfriend

Arjun Kapoor, who was last seen in Ki & Ka, seems to be working hard for his next, Half Girlfriend. Just recently, he reposted a video of himself, while doing chin-ups. Earlier the actor could manage one chin-up with great difficulty. But now, according to his trainer Richard Lovatt’s post, he seems to have increased his capacity manifold. The shooting of the film began just a few days ago. Arjun’s role is that of a basketball player. Produced by Chetan Bhagat, Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, the movie is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel that goes by the same name. It features Shraddha Kapoor opposite Arjun and is directed by Mohit Suri.

Nargis Fakhri goes all white at AmFar Gala

Nargis Fakhri hasn’t been in the thick of things for quite a while due to her ill-health. But now that she’s all better, the girl is back with a bang! The actress is currently in New York to attend the amfAR Gala. She took to Instagram and shared a picture of herself donning an all-white Alexander Wang jumpsuit. And, we can’t help but say that she slays it as always. Excuse us while we get over this goddess.
