Itâs Deepika Padukone vs Priyanka Chopra all over again

It’s Deepika Padukone vs Priyanka Chopra all over again!

While our girls are slayin’ the West, Chinese artistes are trying to make their presence felt in our country. Chinese actress Zhu Zhu recently crossed the border to partner Salman Khan in Kabir Khan’s upcoming Tubelight. According to Mumbai Mirror, now a Chinese actor, Deng Chao, of The Mermaid fame, could feature in Siddharth Anand’s upcoming Indo-China co-production. As the working title, Love In Beijing suggests, it’s the love story between a Chinese man and an Indian girl.

Confirming the same, the Bang Bang director told Mirror, “Yes, it’s a cross-cultural romance set in Beijing. I’m excited to explore and showcase another culture through this film. Our Chinese producers have suggested Deng Chao’s name but we will take a final call when I visit China next month.”

Prod Siddharth on whether it would be Deepika Padukone, who has xXx: The Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel coming up, or Baywatch babe Priyanka Chopra and he keeps it short, stating, “It could possibly be one of them.”

A few Chinese writers have flown down to brainstorm with Siddharth and the Indian team of writers. “We’ve been working in my office since the last week and should be able to lock the script by December. The Chinese are strong-minded people and it’s great fun to work with them. I’ve never shot in China before so it’s a blind spot for me. But I will be travelling there next month with the writers for a recce,” informs Siddharth who will be learning Mandarin (includes a Beijing dialect) to communicate better with his crew. “The actors will be speaking in both Mandarin and Hindi.”

Remembering Sahir Ludhianvi

This post was originally published on this site

Remembering Sahir Ludhianvi

He was the numero uno poet and lyricist of his time who could argue both sides of the argument if need be. He could write on everything from first flush of love to green revolution and had the same empathy for the farmers as he did for lovers…

Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon/  Pal do pal meri kahani hai/ Pal do pal meri hasti hai/ Pal do pal meri jawani  hai… I’m a poet of the moment, for the moment, I won’t outlast the moment, and my tale will be as short… wrote he but his words have transcended death and have become immortal, firing up imaginations long after he’s gone. Sahir Ludhiyanvi was a people’s poet and yet a poet’s poet. Every lyricist past or present wanted to emulate the consummate ease with which he turned out lines which were simple and yet wove a web of delicate meanings.

The versatile poet was born 8 March, 1921 in Ludhiana as Abdul Hayee and continuing the long held practice, he took the nom de plume of Sahir Ludhianvi, which literally means he was a poet from Ludhiana – ironically one of the busiest industrial hubs in India. He was said to have been born to a family of rich landowners. His mother reportedly divorced his father when he took a second wife. His father wanted his custody but lost. He was just 13 at the time and the domestic crisis, as well as the loss of financial security, affected him greatly. It may have led him towards commitment phobia at later life as all his various affairs never really fructified into a steady relationship.

He started writing while still in school and was active as a writer and a poet throughout school and college, winning accolades not only from his peers but from those senior to him as well. After passing out from Khalsa High School in Ludhiana  S. C. Dhawan Government College in Ludhiana from where he was rumouredly expelled for sitting in the lawn with a girl. He then shifted to Lahore where he took admission in Dayal Singh College. The move proved fateful as he was inducted into Lahore’s literary circle, getting a chance to publish his masterpiece, Talkhiyan – a heady mix of poems reflecting on the bitterness of love and life, while still a student.

His mastery over Urdu was noticed and at a very young age he was appointed as the editor for progressive Udru periodicals Shaahkaar and Savera as well as Pritlari, where his fierce writing and deft editing helped up the circulation. He joined the Progressive Writer’s Movement  but his literary barbs against Partition in general and the loss of solidarity between Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs angered the Pakistani Government. He took the decision to leave Pakistan and shift to Bombay. He took to writing lyrics as a means of earning money and thus a legend got more, more as a byproduct of circumstances than by design.

Bombay’s writers like Shahid Lateef, Krishan Chander, Ismat Chugtai, Kaifi Azmi and others from IPTA and corollary circles knew of him and welcomed him with open arms. He was never bereft of friends and admirers and soon made his debut as a lyricist in Azadi Ki Raah Par (1949). Badal rahi hai zindagi is said to be his first film song. However, it was in 1951, with the release of two films, Naujawan and later Baazi, that he became the favourite of the masses. Thandi hawayein lehra ke aayen from Naujawan and Tadbir se bigdi hui taqdeer bana le from Baazi are still popular today. Both films had music by SD Burman and thanks to that friendship, was inculcated in the Guru Dutt-Dev Anand circle, remaining the lyricist of choice for both filmmakers. Guru Dutt’s poetic side appealed to him and the merging of their sensibilities resulted in Pyaasa (1957) – their best work together as well individually. It’s also said that the poet Vijay’s character from the film was based on Sahir’s own disillusionment of being a sensitive soul in a world which cared more for money than actual merit.

Ironically, it’s said that a rift appeared between him and Dada Burman after Pyaasa as both men claimed it was their work which contributed more to the popularity of the songs.  Maybe it was this falling apart which led him to practice the alleged policy of insisting that the composers adapt their tunes to his lyrics and not vice-versa. He was able to form long associations with various composers like Khayyam, Ravi, N Dutta, Roshan and Madan Mohan despite such a close. His pen might not have been as productive as some of the others but what he wrote became the gold standard when it came to lyrics. It became a matter of prestige for filmmakers to have him on board.

As a poet, he never restricted himself just to themes of love. He could turn his hand at every topic and could have his take on both sides of an argument. For instance, he wrote – Woh subhah kabhi to aayegi (when will that dawn come which will change life) and countered that with Woh subhah hami se aayegi – we’ll bring out the change, it won’t come on its own. His love poetry always carried a tinge of sadness as he knew that perfect love can’t be found in this world. It’s said that writer Amrita Pritam was madly in love with him. He used to go to her place and smoke cigarettes after cigarettes, sitting companionably in a smoke-filled silence and later Amrita used to smoke the butts, after he was gone… He was also linked to singer Sudha Malhotra. And maybe this intense friendship led to an alleged rift with Lata Mangeshkar, what with him asking for one rupee more than what the producers were paying the songstress supreme.

He reportedly turned into an intense alcoholic in later life, leading to his untimely death at the age of 59 on 25 October, 1980…

Ajay, Kajol on Kapil's show

This post was originally published on this site

Actor-filmmaker Ajay Devgn, who is awaiting the release of his directorial venture Shivaay, says he fears losing his loved ones.

“Everybody has fears and I have too. The biggest fear is to lose the loved ones and the second fear, which is a very stupid fear, is of height even after doing Shivaay,” Ajay said. Ajay has acted in, directed and co-produced Shivaay. The film, which is slated to release on October 28 around the occasion of Diwali, will clash at the box office with filmmaker Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Beside Ajay, the film also stars Sayyeshaa Saigal, Erika Kaar, Vir Das and Girish Karnad.

The actor is married to actress Kajol, and they have two children together. Talking about the film, Ajay said: “The first thought behind making a film is emotion. When I started working on the script, I thought of telling a story of a strong bond between a parent and child as I am a father too. So it is a film of father-daughter bond. It’s an emotional drama and a love story between father and daughter.”

Aamir Khan reveals how he started his acting career

Recently Aamir Khan revealed that despite being from a film family, nobody at home wanted him to act in movies. They wanted him to pursue career in engineering. Aamir said, “At that time almost everyone felt, film industry was not a good place to be. My own family, uncle Nasir sahab (Nasir Hussain) and father (Tahir Hussain) were telling me, ‘No. Don’t go in films’. Both filmmakers were telling me not to go in films. I was very conscious of one thing. I never wanted Nasir sahab and Abba jaan to ever feel that ‘Now it is our responsibility to launch Aamir. So, I was doing my own thing, I used to go to FTII, do diploma films over there. But I never ever even by mistake used to mention to chacha jaan or to abba jaan about me wanting to act. I didn’t want to come close to it.”

Aamir started acting with a short film ‘Paranoia’ directed by Aditya Bhattacharya. He asked him to feature in it as an actor, assistant director, and spot boy. And that experience made him interested in filmmaking. Aamir said it was Shabana Azmi who watched the movie and praised him. “Nobody in my house knew I had gone to shoot the film. I used to pretend that I was going for hockey match, but used to go for shooting. She said, ‘Oh you are Tahir sahab’s son! I must tell him you’re a fantastic actor.’ I said, ‘No, You can’t tell him that.’ She said, ‘You are a fantastic actor, you should be acting’. I felt so good.”

Shahid Kapoor expresses his feelings of being a part of Padmavati

We all know Shahid Kapoor is on paternal break, but soon he will start shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next magnum opus for Padmavati that also stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. Talking about Padmavati for the first time ever, Shahid said, “I wish Padmavati came to me five or six years back. I am happy it is coming to me today. I am happy that I am working with a filmmaker like Sanjay Leela Bhansali. When I saw his last film Bajirao Mastani, I expressed openly how much I enjoyed the film and I was very happy that an Indian film was made at that size and scale. The fact that it did exceedingly well was great and you know that it was a film that was loved by people. I am grateful and thankful for that opportunity. If five years back I said no to it, someone would’ve watched me and said that’s the stupidest mistake of my life. Maybe it is coming to me today because I am ready for it.”

Rohit Shetty calls his own film “crap”

Blockbuster director Rohit Shetty thinks his 2008 hit movie Golmaal Returns was a crap film. Starring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tusshar Kapoor and Arshad Warsi, the movie was a blockbuster at the box-office.

While speaking as a panellist at the ongoing MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival, Shetty said that he can sense it when his film goes wrong. “I start getting that feeling when you are going wrong. My films are hardcore commercial films catering to a particular audience. So, you start getting that feeling that it won’t work at that level. I have been right about it twice or thrice,” he said.

If a film fails at the box-office, how does he get back to making films? He said, “We rectify ourselves… what all went wrong. Even if it is a hit, the whole team sits together and we introspect. Golmaal Returns was the biggest hit of those days… in 2008. But we knew it’s a crap film.”
