Netflix for iOS update brings HDR support to the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPad Pro

In between the rollout of iOS 11 and the launch of the iPhone 8 this week, Netflix updated its iOS app to add support for Dolby Vision HDR video on the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, as well as the 10.5-inch model and 12.9-inch model of the second generation iPad Pro. If you own any of these devices, you can head to the App Store right now to get the latest version of the Netflix app and begin streaming HDR content.

In order to actually stream HDR content on Netflix, you do need to be subscribed to the premium plan, which costs $11.99/month. The premium plan lets you stream TV shows and movies on four devices at the same time and in HD and ultra high definition (UHD), as well as download titles on four different devices.

If you subscribe to the premium plan and downloaded the latest update on iOS, all you need to do is open the app and search “HDR” to see all of the HDR content available on the streaming service. Some of the highlights include Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, The Defenders, Glow and Chef’s Table. Most of the current HDR shows are Netflix originals, but there are a few third-party shows and movies too.

It’s hard to say how much of a difference HDR will make, especially on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which still feature LCD displays, but it’s still nice to have the option. It’s worth noting that Netflix on the Apple TV 4K supports HDR video as well, which is where you’ll definitely see the difference.

NEW YORK , Sept.� Hanwha Techwin America (formerly Samsung Techwin America), a leader in consumer video monitoring and home surveillance products, today unveiled the Wisenet SmartCam D1, the world’s first video doorbell with face recognition alerts in the market.

The D1 is equipped with next-generation technology, including face recognition and human detection, enabled by Hanwha Techwin’s advanced Wisenet 5 chipset. When a person’s face is detected, the doorbell captures and crops the face automatically. The user can assign a name to the face, noting them as an “interested face.” Through the Wisenet SmartCam+ mobile app, users can receive alerts when an unidentified visitor or an “interested face” is detected at the door. The technology reduces false alerts, only alerting users to humans, and not animals or cars passing. What’s more, users with a Hanwha Techwin SmartCloud service plan can also filter through videos based on specific individuals captured by face recognition.

The Wisenet 5 chipset also enables Abnormal Sound Detection. When the video doorbell identifies sirens, screaming, and glass breaking, an audio alert is immediately sent to the user’s smartphone.

In addition, the video doorbell has a built-in microphone and speaker for Two-Way Talk, live-view on demand, high performance wide dynamic range for color balance in backlit situations, and 2D/3D noise reduction to improve images taken in low-light conditions. The camera also features 1080p full HD streaming, 150-degree field of view, and dual Wi-Fi band.

Users are alerted when the doorbell rings through their existing hardwired mechanical/electric chime bell, as well as through the mobile app. The D1 can also connect with the Wisenet-SmartCam A1 home security system and be set up to notify users via both devices when the doorbell rings.

Recordings from the D1 can be stored via Hanwha Techwin’s SmartCloud cloud storage service, powered by video analytics. Subscription plans are available for event storage for 30 days, 60 days, and 180 days.

Behind-the-scenes video shows how Apple gets ready for iPhone day

Today is Christmas for gadget nerds, better known as iPhone day. It’s the magical time of year when Tim Cook and Jony Ive finally ship whatever they’ve been working on for the last 12 months to an ever-willing crowd of consumers. It’s a massive exercise in logistics, and to understand what makes the Apple machine “just work,” Buzzfeed sent a reporter and a camera team into the belly of the capitalist beast.

The process starts with the pre-orders, which are handled by Apple Retail’s team in an all-night frenzy in a “war room.” After the initial rush, the Retail team starts working out where stock is going to have to go and when, and head of retail Angela Ahrendts starts the “hype tour” of Apple Retail locations, which is like a political primary campaign, but with more T-shirts and hugging.

Shipping is handled by UPS. Phones come in on planes from China, and received into UPS’s special processing facility. The one-off rush means that UPS sets aside time in its sorting facilities to single-handedly sort Apple products.

On launch day, UPS ships those devices out to homes and Apple stores in time for consumers to get their hands on them. Normally, the devices have to be wheeled in past hordes of queuing fans, but this year, that’s not such an issue.

Tim Cook is ‘thrilled’ with iPhone 8 sales, says Apple Watch LTE fix is coming

Apple last year decided to break a multi-year tradition when it opted not to release opening weekend sales figures for the iPhone 7. Similarly, there’s a slim-to-none chance that Apple will be forthcoming with precise iPhone 8 sales figures this year. All the more so given that early iPhone 8 sales may be uncharacteristically low due to the impending launch of the highly anticipated iPhone X.

Nonetheless, Tim Cook did take some time to assure the masses that iPhone 8 sales have been strong thus far, despite some speculative reports to the contrary. Speaking to CNBC earlier today, the Apple CEO said that he’s been “thrilled” with both iPhone 8 and Apple Watch 3 sales.

“I am thrilled,” Cook explained. “Here’s what we’re seeing right now. The watch with LTE — the Series 3 Watch — we are sold out in so many places around the world. And we’re working really hard to meet demand. We’ve sold out of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus in some stores, but we’ve got good supply there. You can see what’s going on here this morning — I couldn’t be happier.”

To be fair, this doesn’t tell us much of anything and we’ll have to wait until next week to get a firmer grasp on just how strong, or perhaps weak, iPhone 8 sales are. And with Apple now refusing to divulge opening weekend sales figures, there’s a good chance we won’t fully know how the device performed until Apple’s December earnings report and accompanying earnings conference call.

Incidentally, Tim Cook briefly addressed the LTE issues which seemed to impact nearly all early reviewers.

“The issue is very minor,” Cook said. “It will be fixed in a software update. It has to do with the handoff between Wi-Fi and cellular, and we’ll fix that. It only happens in a rare number of cases.”

iPhone 8 Plus goes up against the iPhone 7 Plus in new speed test

Brace yourself, folks. With Apple’s iPhone 8 models arriving in stores today, we’re about to be bombarded with an avalanche of video tests designed to showcase just how fast and durable Apple’s next-gen iPhone 8 models truly are. Kicking things off for us is YouTuber MadMatt who threw together an interesting speed test which pits Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus against last year’s iPhone 7 Plus.

Right off the bat, we see that the iPhone 8 Plus manages to start-up just a hair quicker than its predecessor. When it comes to opening up apps, there’s not much of a difference between the two devices. When running Geekbench, the iPhone 8 Plus checked in with a single core score of 4264 against 3445 for the iPhone 7 Plus. The multicore score, though, saw an even bigger differential, with the iPhone 8 Plus boasting a score of 10396 while the iPhone 7 Plus checked in with a score of 5691. So say what you will about the A11 Bionic name, but the chip itself — which also boasts the first ever Apple-designed GPU — is an absolute monster.

Now to be fair, the iPhone 7 Plus’ A10 fusion chip is a serious performer in its own right. That being the case, you’ll really appreciate the extra horsepower the iPhone 8 Plus delivers when running processor intensive apps like AR-based apps which, not surprisingly, are increasingly populating the App Store.

Incidentally, Apple told The Verge earlier this week that the A11 Bionic name was simply conjured up for marketing purposes. And while some might understandably scoff at the name, what Apple managed to pull off here is truly remarkable. Not only is the A11 Bionic a huge improvement over the A10 Fusion, it also leaves Android devices in the dust.

New drop test video shows how tough the iPhone 8 Plus is

Like clockwork, the first iPhone 8 drop test video has already hit the web, just a few short hours after Apple’s next-gen smartphone hit store shelves. Put together by the folks over at EverythingApplePro, the video compares how well the iPhone 8 Plus withstands drops to the ground compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 7 Plus.  While most iPhone torture tests are completely unnecessary, with this video of an iPhone 7 meeting molten aluminum being a prime example, drop tests are usually worth paying attention to because accidental drops is how most people tend to damage their device.

Though Apple’s iPhone 8 models may look similar to last year’s iPhone 7 lineup, there’s an important change in materials worth noting. As opposed to the iPhone 7 which featured an aluminum back, the iPhone 8 back is made out of glass, a design decision made to support the iPhone 8’s new wireless charging feature.

That said, the glass Apple uses on its iPhone 8 models is said to be a custom-design and incredibly resilient. Indeed, Apple boasts that the iPhone 8 features the “most durable glass” to ever appear in a smartphone.

Apple’s iPhone 8 product page reads in part: “The front and back feature custom glass with a 50 percent deeper strengthening layer. A new steel substructure and a stronger, aerospace‑grade 7000 Series aluminum band provide additional reinforcement.”

But onto the video.

The first drop is at 3 feet and the iPhone 7 Plus cracks immediately whereas the iPhone 8 Plus is able to withstand the impact. As the tests go on, the back of the iPhone 8 Plus is more prone to cracking, but the display itself manages to hold up impressively well.

Lenovo’s leaked 25th-anniversary ThinkPad sports a familiar look

The latest ThinkPad that Lenovo brought to CES back in January had a notably sleeker, more modern appearance than the line’s traditional boxy black look. But it kept a couple features, like the red TrackPoint nub and 45-degree ThinkPad logo, that have become trademarks of the beloved brand since it debuted under IBM back in October 1992. But WinFuture reports that a leak revealed Lenovo is releasing a 25th-anniversary retro version that mimics the look of the first ThinkPad laptops that reached consumers.

According to the leak, the allegedly-named ThinkPad 25 has visual touches from its ancestor (like a multicolored logo and blue ‘Enter’ key) but will otherwise be based on the ThinkPad 470 series. Its tech specs are pretty standard for midline laptops: A 14-inch IPS display, Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD storage and a NVIDIA GTE 940MX GPU. It has all your modern ports, too: A Thunderbolt-rated USB-C, three standard USB, an SD slot, HDMI and even an Ethernet port. Rounding out its modern tech is a fingerprint scanner and infrared webcam for facial recognition.

As The Verge points out, this anniversary edition looks a lot like the retro-classic ThinkPad concept that Lenovo VP of design David Hill mentioned a couple years ago. Given that the initial consumer-facing ThinkPads were introduced 25 years ago next month, this model might be announced in October, assuming the info is accurate.

The iPhone 8 only landed this morning, but photographers the world over have wasted no time in getting to know Apple’s newest camera. Smartphone cameras are one of the areas that see the most improvement year-on-year, and it looks like 2018 is going to be no different.

Portrait mode with the software-assisted Studio Lighting is set to be one of the highlights of the iPhone 8 Plus, and the first pictures are surprisingly close to what Apple showed off on stage.

Also, it looks like your timeline is about to be completely full of black-and-white portrait photos, so brace yourself.

Apple extends iTunes movie rentals to 48 hours

It used to be that when you rented a movie from Apple’s iTunes service, you’d have 24 hours to finish watching it. You could start streaming the rental within 30 days of purchase, of course. Just a couple of weeks after Apple made 4K an affordable option, the company has doubled the rental time to 48 hours. This is perfect for those of us with young kids who want to watch a movie over (and over and over) or busy schedules that don’t let us get to our movies right away. The timer starts even if you’re watching the film offline, too.

While the new 48-hour rental period is available in the US, we’ve reached out to Apple to see if it will be the same in other countries and regions that support iTunes movie rentals and will update this post when we hear back.

Movies can be rented via iTunes on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV and a Mac or PC with the latest version of iTunes. Once you hit the Rent button, you can then tap Rent and Watch Later (on Apple TV) or Not Now (on iOS devices). The option is called Watch Later on Mac or PC. You can download the movies to watch offline, too, with a tap on the little cloud and down arrow button. You’re not restricted to the device you rent on, either; you can watch on any supported device that you’ve logged into with your iTunes account.

 

 

Tesla might build convenience stores at its charging stations

Tesla plans to roll out more electric supercharging stations this year, especially in big cities, which should double the size of its network. But even with more places to juice up your Tesla, it still takes far longer to refill an EV than gassing up a fossil fuel-powered car. But the electric vehicle maker is considering adding small convenience stores to the stations so you can relax and refuel yourself while you wait.

As Grub Street noted, earlier this week at FSTEC, the food tech conference, Tesla’s CTO JB Straubel mentioned that folks are already spending time waiting for their cars to charge — why not make their stay a little more comfortable? “People are coming and spending 20 to 30 minutes at these stops,” waiting for their Teslas to suck up electric power, Restaurant Business quoted Straubel saying at the conference. “They want to eat, they want to have a cup of coffee, they want to use the bathroom.”

Straubel reportedly showed the audience mock-ups of service stop designs, which had begun to resemble traditional convenience stores. Not that Tesla will get into the business itself — instead, it would seek partners to run them. Straubel noted that the company has already been working with restaurants, and “That can only start scaling up.”

A new wireless charging coil, for starters: The integrated Qi (pronounced “chee”) system relies on a magnetic field that induces an alternating current in the receiving coil. Or, as iFixit put it, “the magic juice that fuels the battery.”

The battery that, despite a drop in capacity compared to its predecessor (and the similarly spec’d Samsung Galaxy S8), will be comparable with last year’s device, according to Cupertino.

One of the most commonly replaced smartphone components, the juice pack pops easily out with a tug at four stretch-release adhesive strips (like the ones you use to hang pictures on the wall without damage).

Similarly, the multitouch display—with its 7-megapixel FaceTime HD camera and solid-state Home button—breaks free with a bit of heat and elbow grease.

Which is good news for DIY repairs: Straightforward access and the proper tools mean you can sub in a fresh battery or clean display if needed. And the addition of wireless charging means less strain on the Lightning port, “a common point of failure,” according to iFixit.

But there are still a few hoops you’ll have to jump through, including complicated water and dust seals. Meanwhile, the durability of the glass back is still in question, but will likely make replacements “very difficult.”

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are available now in space gray, silver, and a new gold finish; choose between the increased 64GB and 256GB models, starting at $699 for the iPhone 8 and $799 for the 8 Plus.

Antsy Apple fans may want to think about upgrading now, as iPhone X production delays could push the $999 phone’s release much later than anticipated.

The iPhone 8’s glass back costs way more to repair than the front

Over the last couple of weeks, the price of AppleCare+ has gone up for Plus model iPhones and screen repair for the 6s and newer models has gotten $20 more expensive. However, while screen replacements for phones under AppleCare+ warranty are still $29, that’s not the case for replacing the back glass of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, according to AppleInsider.

A number of Apple employees have told AppleInsider that the back glass isn’t covered under screen repair and is instead qualified as “other damage,” the fee for which is $99. This is likely because removing the glass back is markedly more difficult than swapping out a screen. Unlike the front glass, the back glass is glued in really well, requiring much more effort to remove. AppleCare+ allows for two incidents of accidental damage, after which your repair price jumps up to $349 for the iPhone 8 and $399 for the Plus for anything other than a screen repair.

So be careful with that iPhone 8. Between higher AppleCare+ costs and higher damage repair fees, that new phone could turn out to be much pricier than you bargained for.
