Fijian Government Selects EUTELSAT 172B for Providing Universal Television Access

PARIS &Walesi, the Fijian Government’s Digital Television infrastructure management company, has signed a multi year agreement with Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris ETL) that will for the first time expand free to air television throughout Fiji. The agreement covers C band capacity on the EUTELSAT 172B satellite to complement terrestrial coverage of the Walesi digital television platform.

Eutelsat’s new, all-electric satellite, now in full commercial service, will allow Walesi to provide digital free-to-air television via a Direct-to-Home (DTH) platform that will serve even the most remote, deep rural, and maritime areas of Fiji located beyond range of terrestrial networks. The platform will initially provide access to six digital free-to-air channels – with capacity to further expand – that will be accessible via a set-top box. Walesi will announce details regarding the DTH roll-out and Government-subsidised boxes in the coming weeks.

“This universal satellite coverage will be transformational for Fiji in three ways: it will provide better access to information to all Fijians, especially those in remote, deep rural, and maritime communities; it will further Fiji’s standing as an international telecommunications hub for the entire Pacific region; and it will fortify the climate resilience of our infrastructure,” said Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Fijian Attorney-General and Minister for Communications. “This is just the beginning; going forward, our partnership with Eutelsat will allow the Government to fulfil our vision of providing video, data, and voice access to every community in Fiji.”

Listen, I’m sure some of you grew up watching the Transformers cartoon and played Street Fighter years later with a wish in your heart that these two worlds would meet. For those happy few, there are now mash-up toys that let Ryu, villain M. Bison, Ken and Chun Li morph into cars and planes.

Tipsters pointed Transformers fan site Seibertron to the new line, which seems to reuse old models from previous years’ Transformers toys. Ergo, Ryu is Optimus Prime (called Convoy in Japan), M. Bison is Megatron, Ken is Hot Rod and Chun Li is Arcee. They’ll be released in paired sets, with the more complex Ryoptimus and M. Bisotron going for about $115 US while Kot Rod and Charcee cost around $76. The rumor mill has both coming out in May 2018. Check out the full mock-ups below, which Seibertron put together:



BMW will never make this absolutely insane concept motorcycle, but it totally should

BMW, perhaps more than most other longtime auto manufacturers, embraces odd designs and out-of-the-box concepts. You don’t need to look far in the company’s lineup to see some incredibly unique design choices, but every company has its limits. That’s why you’re absolutely never going to see the BMW R1100R KHAN concept cruising down your city streets, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less awesome.

The brainchild of Turkish designer Mehmet Erdem, the R1100R KHAN looks like something you’d expect to see in a modern day Tron reboot, but it’s actually designed with real world tolerances in mind. Featuring a massive rear wheel, forward-leaning rider position, and a big, beefy motor, and incredibly aggressive body, it’s a glorious example of what vehicles might be like if safety and practicality were thrown out the window.

The original BMW R1100R was a fairly modest motorcycle, produced by the company for five years beginning in 1994. It featured a twin engine that put out close to 80 horsepower, and had a top speed over just over 120 miles per hour.

The reimagining of the bike as the KHAN concept changes things in a big way, trading the normal upright rider position for a forward-leaning posture that puts the rider’s head over the completely covered front wheel. The massive rear wheel spins just inches from the back of the saddle, so we’d recommend avoiding a long shirt.

It doesn’t look like it would be the most comfortable thing in the world to ride, at least for extended periods of time, but it would probably a very exhilarating experience while it lasted. Just don’t slam into anything or you’d likely be launched like an arrow right over the Khan’s smooth body panels and windshield-free front section.

Apple might not be making a self-driving car, but it sure is interested in autonomous tech

As one of the most secretive tech companies out there, Apple rarely reveals any details regarding hardware or software products that may be in development. But the company last week quietly disclosed self-driving car research that proves not only that Apple is interested in this field, but that it may have solutions to improve various aspects of it.

The paper details technology that can be used by existing self-driving cars equipped with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology for mapping their surroundings to better detect obstacles, including pedestrians and cyclists.

First spotted on arXiv by Reuters, the paper describes a so-called VoxelNet technology for autonomous cars, and appears to be the company’s first disclosed paper on this subject.

Apple said a year ago that it will let AI and machine learning researchers to share their research with the world. In July, the company launched the Apple Machine Learning Journal which covers the same topics. However, Apple’s blog did not cover self-driving cars before.

What the VoxelNet tech does, is to allow computers to detect moving obstacles with the help of LiDAR information only, without the necessity of additional sensors. Detecting 3D obstacles from a distance is a crucial aspect of self-driving car tech, as autonomous cars will have to interpret in real time, as fast as possible, everything that happens around them. The technology might be even better than what’s currently available out there.

Experiments on the KITTI car detection benchmark show that VoxelNet outperforms the state-of-the-art LiDAR-based 3D detection methods by a large margin. Furthermore, our network learns an effective discriminative representation of objects with various geometries, leading to encouraging results in 3D detection of pedestrians and cyclists, based on only LiDAR.

It’s unclear at this time what Apple plans to do with self-driving cars in the future, but the paper proves it’s a very hot topic at Apple.

Something very weird is happening on Saturn’s moon Titan

Thanks to the efforts of NASA and its incredibly reliable Cassini spacecraft, we now know more about Saturn and its moons than ever before, but it seems there are still some surprises in store for scientists studying the planet and its natural satellites. New research by scientists at the University of Bristol has revealed an interesting quirk with Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, and it flies in the face of everything science has predicted.

It seems that Titan’s polar regions have a rather unpredictable personality, and observations made by Cassini have shown that an expected hot spot near Titan’s pole had rapidly turned into a frigid polar vortex. This stood in contrast to what previous observations suggested, especially considering the same spot had been seemingly getting hotter as recently as late 2009. Now, researchers think they have an explanation.

The current best guess for the strange behavior of Titan’s pole is that chemicals in its atmosphere are responsible for the chilly trend.

“For the Earth, Venus, and Mars, the main atmospheric cooling mechanism is infrared radiation emitted by the trace gas CO2 and because CO2 has a long atmospheric lifetime it is well mixed at all atmospheric levels and is hardly affected by atmospheric circulation,” Dr Nick Teanby, lead author of the study, explains. “However, on Titan, exotic photochemical reactions in the atmosphere produce hydrocarbons such as ethane and acetylene, and nitriles including hydrogen cyanide and cyanoacetylene, which provide the bulk of the cooling.”

Using a model based on data gathered by Cassini, the team was able to demonstrate that the incredibly unique mix of chemicals over the polar region could indeed result in sharp temperature drops and extremely frigid atmospheric temperatures.

The study, which was published in Nature Communications, points out that while the behavior of Titan is particularly odd to us, the same thing might be happening on exoplanets and other moons outside of our Solar System. The research could help inform further study of those far-away worlds in the long term.

Facebook’s latest move on Russian fake news is too little, too late

Facebook published a blog post Wednesday outlining its plans to fully explain how Russian agents used its social network to influence the 2016 presidential elections. The cornerstone of its transparency going forwards will be a tool, accessible by the end of the year, that should let users know if they liked or followed a Facebook Page created by a Russian troll farm.

The tool will not, however, inform any of the estimated 140 million users who might’ve seen that content without liking or following a page.

“We will soon be creating a portal to enable people on Facebook to learn which of the Internet Research Agency Facebook Pages or Instagram accounts they may have liked or followed between January 2015 and August 2017,” the company wrote. “This tool will be available for use by the end of the year in the Facebook Help Center.”

Facebook continued to try and justify its actions thus far. “It is important that people understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 US election. That’s why as we have discovered information, we have continually come forward to share it publicly and have provided it to congressional investigators. And it’s also why we’re building the tool we are announcing today.”

The company maintains that technical and privacy reasons prevent it from building a similar tool to inform users if they saw content spread by the Internet Research Agency, a group that the intelligence community has labeled as a Russian operation.

Budweiser vows to be first beer on Mars, and will send barley into space next month as a start

Like it or not, humanity won’t be able to live on Earth forever. If we don’t wipe out our own species by the time we figure out where to go, we’ll eventually have to shove off of the planet and head elsewhere. When that happens, we’re going to need a lot of things, and one of those things is beer. Budweiser is totally fine with that, and they’re working hard at figuring out how to brew beer in space.

Next month, Budweiser will be sending one of the primary ingredients in beer, barley, into space aboard a cargo supply mission that will head skyward on December 4th. It will remain at the International Space Station for a month before coming back to Earth to be analyzed by Budweiser’s team of scientists. It’s a small step with a big final goal: to make Budweiser the first beer on Mars.

“Budweiser is always pushing the boundaries of innovation and we are inspired by the collective American Dream to get to Mars,” Ricardo Marques, Budweiser VP said in a statement. “We are excited to begin our research to brew beer for the red planet.”

A total of 20 barley seedlings are slated to be sent into space, and will be housed in special “CubeLab” containers for the duration of their stay in orbit. The experiment hopes to shine some light on how zero gravity affects the growth of the plant and what potential pitfalls might be encountered if one would attempt to brew beer during a long-haul mission.

At present, only tentative plans are in place for a manned Mars mission, and they’re still more than a decade away at the very earliest. It’s safe to say that ensuring astronauts can crack open a cold one isn’t exactly on the top of NASA’s priority list, but if an actual Mars colony is established at some point in the distant future, they’re probably going to want something to look forward to on Saturday nights.

Black Friday is normally a shopping holiday for gadgets, TVs, kitchen appliances, and basically anything else you can pile into a shopping cart at Walmart. But nearly everyone who sells anything is getting in on the action this year, and that includes airlines.

The best deals include one-way flights to Europe for $99, roundtrip flights to European vacation destinations for $559, and deals on flight and hotel packages.

It’s not just the budget airlines getting in on the deals. Sure, Iceland’s WOW Air is responsible for the $99 one-way fares to Europe, but Delta and Southwest also have deals going on. Some of the best spotted by Business Insider include 1,250 seats being sold for $99 for one-way trips from Boston, Chicago, and Pittsburgh to Reykjavik, Amsterdam, London, or Ireland; and $129 one-way trips fro LA, San Fransisco, and Miami to the same destinations. The deal is only valid if you buy another one-way ticket back at the same time, but those can be as cheap as $150.

Ryanair, the notorious European discount airline, is having a sale on fares for as low as $6.50. Flights from London Stanstead go to destinations like Denmark, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

However, one fare-checking website suggests that Black Friday might not be the best time to get cheap fares. Instead, it says you should wait until the Tuesday after  — dubbed Travel Deal Tuesday — for the best deals. “We analyzed our historical flight pricing data and found that fare sale activity significantly spikes on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving,” a blog post says. “The airlines offer major discounts because travel demand tends to die down following Thanksgiving. Most travelers have already booked their holiday airfare, but haven’t started planning their winter getaways yet.”

The programme is intended to motivate young people to pursue education and careers in STEAM industries and is supported by local, regional, national and European stakeholders, including the Catalan Ministry of Education, businesses across STEAM industries, professional institutions, R&D laboratories, not-for-profit charities, universities and other specialist education institutions.

It is anticipated that more than 15,000 students and educators from across Catalonia and Spain will come to Barcelona to participate in this engaging and inspiring four-day showcase of science and technology, making it the largest STEAM event in Spain. Designed for students from eight to 18 years old, YoMo Barcelona will feature educational exhibits, live shows, interactive workshops, and a wide range of hands-on activities. Sprint Runs Energy Efficiency with Yardi Proliphix

Sprint’s dedication to customer convenience led to more sustainable operating practices, which helped increase the size of the company’s portfolio by 30% since 2015, despite pressure from online sellers on bricks and mortar retail.

One of the keys to this strategy is Yardi® Proliphix. This building energy management system helps optimize lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems with cloud-based remote management software. The system continuously monitors temperatures, thermostat settings and potential equipment malfunctions.

Sprint initially implemented Yardi Proliphix in 2012 to reduce energy costs in its retail locations by 15% with an anticipated 18-month return on investment. The initial success of this project prompted Sprint to extend its Yardi Proliphix deployment as its portfolio expanded.

Many retailers, particularly those with smaller locations, consider energy management systems too expensive. However, the new Yardi Proliphix implementations will cost Sprint less than a conventional standard programmable thermostat. Because Yardi Proliphix can function as a lighting control system, Sprint will not need to install a second system.

“An effective energy management system is absolutely necessary to maintaining low operational costs. Proliphix represents an excellent investment for our portfolio by maintaining a 14% reduction in energy costs and a 15-20% reduction in maintenance costs. As a diagnostic tool, it helps our maintenance teams be proactive and efficient,” said Darrel Carter, enterprise energy manager for Sprint.

Yardi Proliphix also helps Sprint avoid the erosion of energy upgrade benefits-up to 30% annually-that occurs without continuous commissioning of energy and comfort management systems.

“Proliphix gives Sprint the support and tools for ongoing cost savings, consumption reduction and customer comfort that aren’t possible with a one-time ‘set it and forget it’ approach. Yardi looks forward to helping Sprint continue to achieve its energy efficiency goals,” said Matt Eggers, vice president of Yardi Energy.
