After carrying out 300 hours of research, three lab tests in the past four years, and a new weeklong real-world test encompassing 18 purifiers, we’re more confident than ever that the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty is the best air purifier for most people.

Who should get this

Despite prolific marketing to the contrary, scientific studies do not support claims that air purifiers improve your health, in part because it’s exceptionally difficult to disentangle their impact from the many other factors that influence your health. There is, however, overwhelming evidence that breathing particulate pollution can exacerbate asthma, allergies, heart disease, and other medical conditions. And removing particulates is a job HEPA-rated air purifiers excel at.

How we picked and tested

For this guide, we focused on portable air purifiers, which is a blanket term for any purifier not installed directly into your home HVAC system. Several criteria guided our selection:

  • We required true HEPA certification (the US definition), which means an air filter removes 99.97 percent or more of airborne particles of 0.3 micron diameter.
  • Generally, each air purifier had to be rated for at least 350 square feet—bigger than the average living room. We did test one inexpensive purifier rated for spaces smaller than 150 feet in response to reader feedback.
  • Each air purifier should cycle all the air in a room at least twice per hour, and ideally four or five times.

Based on these criteria, we’ve surveyed hundreds of models, read dozens of editorial reviews, and tested 18 air purifiers since 2014. This year, we conducted two tests. First, John Holecek re-created his 2016 lab tests, measuring factors like filtration speed and efficiency, noise level, and ownership cost over time. In the second test, Tim Heffernan used seven air purifiers for a week in a 200-square-foot room in a New York City apartment. This helped us form a detailed picture of how each air purifier performed in the real world. The week he ran the tests was one of the worst of the year in terms of air pollution, with numerous health advisories related to outdoor air quality. Learn more about Tim’s tests in our full guide.

Our pick: Coway AP-1512HH Mighty

After three tests in the lab, one in a New York City apartment, and three years of in-home use, we are more confident than ever that the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty is the best air purifier for most people. It’s one of the best-performing air purifiers we’ve ever tested, and has maintained that level of performance for several years. On long-term costs, it’s also one of the cheapest air purifiers we’ve tested, costing just $600 to buy and run 24/7 for five years.

In terms of measured particle removal, the Coway is very nearly the best we’ve tested. In our 2016 lab test, it purified better than all but two units (the differences were marginal), and in the 2017 lab test, it again outperformed the competition, reducing particulates to as little as 12 percent of the initial level in just 20 minutes. It performed just as well in the 2017 New York City apartment test, reducing particulate pollution to less than 20 percent of the starting level in 20 minutes—again, better than all but two much pricier models, and the differences marginal.

We ran our original test model virtually nonstop for two years without replacing the filter—twice the length of time Coway recommends—and it still worked as well as it did on day one. That’s not hyperbole: In 2016 we measured its performance using both the original and new filters, and found no significant difference.

Runner-up: Winix 5500-2

If the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty is unavailable, the Winix 5500-2 is a close runner-up. It, too, is HEPA-certified and rated to 350 square feet. In our 2016 lab test, it slightly outperformed the Coway, reducing particulate levels to 10 percent of their initial levels, versus 12 percent for the Coway. We prefered the Coway because of its aesthetics, proven long-term performance, and lower five-year purchase-and-operating cost: The Winix costs roughly $180 more, or $36 per year, to run than the Coway.

Upgrade: Coway Airmega 300

If you need to purify the air in a seriously large space, we recommend Coway’s Airmega 300. It’s HEPA-certified to clear spaces of roughly 500 square feet at five complete air changes per hour, or 1,250 square feet at two complete air changes. Its unique twin filters permit very high airflow, allowing it to rapidly filter large volumes of air. Although the Airmega is a great machine for large, open rooms, it’s quite expensive, setting you back about $1,200 to run 24/7 for five years. That’s almost exactly twice the cost of the Coway—and if you need to clean (for example) a bedroom and a living room, two Coways would be a better choice.

Also great: Austin Air HealthMate Standard HM-400

Most air purifiers (including our picks) claim to reduce VOCs, odors, and molecular-sized pollution that’s far smaller than the particulates a HEPA filter can catch. But only the Austin truly delivers that claim, with a 15-pound activated-carbon filter that easily outperformed all other air purifiers (their thin, lightweight activated-charcoal filters proved far too small to make a meaningful difference). In our tests for VOC/odor/molecular-pollution removal, the Austin reduced a heavy load of ethanol vapors to 13 percent of the starting level within 20 minutes, performing twice as well as the nearest competitor. This is a big reason FEMA and the Red Cross deployed Austin Air units for at Ground Zero after 9/11.

The Austin is also a very solid performer on particulates, reducing them to less than 20 percent of starting levels after 30 minutes on high in our real-world test and to 50 percent on low. However, the dense carbon filter means it consumes more electricity than our pick. Its five-year cost is about $1,300, more than double the price of the Coway.

Budget pick: GermGuardian AC4825

If you need to use a purifier only in a bedroom, small office, or dorm room, the GermGuardian AC4825 is a decent choice. It’s rated for 156 square feet of space, but in our 350-square-foot lab, it still reduced particulates by about 80 percent, and by about 70 percent in the 200-square-foot NYC apartment (compared with approximately 87 percent by the Coway in both spaces; 30-minute tests, on the high setting). It’s cheaper up front than the Coway, but costlier long-term: about $740 to run for five years, or roughly $140 more. So it’s a budget pick only if you plan to use it short-term, or if you aren’t paying the utility bill (as in an office or dorm).

People are about to start dumping cable faster than ever before

It’s a bad time to be a cable TV executive. Streaming services are popping up faster than big cable companies can throttle them, and years of bad customer service mean that customers are chomping at the bit to switch to something else. Recent data has indicated that a steady trickle of customers have already started switching to streaming, but a new survey of 1,200 consumers hints that it could be more of a tidal wave than a drip.

RBC Capital Markets surveyed 1,200 US consumers to understand their attitude towards cable TV. Of the respondents, only 55% said that they’d continue to subscribe to cable or satellite TV. According to RBC’s analysis, that means only 68 million households are interested in keeping pay TV long-term.

Right now, there are 86 million households subscribed to pay TV. That means 18 million households that currently have cable subscriptions are open to leaving soon. Steven Cahall, the RBC analyst, described this as implying “subscriber declines still have lots of potential downside.”

In simpler words: get ready for a bloodbath.

The only saving grace for cable companies is that for now, streaming services are still relatively expensive. “Skinny” packages like Sling TV or YouTube TV cost around $40 per month, which when added to an internet subscription, is pretty close to the cost of cable and broadband anyway.

But going forwards, all that could change. The media industry is being shaken up, including a shift in content ownership towards companies like Netflix. That has the potential to undo some of the bundling restrictions currently put in place by content owners, which in turn could result in cheaper, a la carte TV options. With more competition as a result of streaming services, it’s just a matter of time.

Axon hopes you'll submit smartphone video as evidence

In theory, handing your smartphone video over to the police if you have evidence of a crime is the right thing to do — it provides accountability and could be the key to a conviction. However, those contributions are about to enter a gray area. Axon (the brand formerly known as Taser) has confirmed that it’s working on a “Public Evidence Product” that would let you submit photos and videos to, its cloud platform normally used for police footage. That doesn’t sound so bad on the surface, but the handling and potential motivations are raising concerns that this amounts to excessive privatization of the justice system.

Axon maintains that it doesn’t own or watch footage, which instead goes directly to the department. However, civil rights advocates are concerned that it might still use the shots for profit, or for things other than the direct case at hand (such as building biometric databases). And what happens if the footage concerns police abuses. Shouldn’t it go to an independent body? Even if Axon lives up to its promise not to watch footage, it’s not going to be completely neutral ground.

There’s also the question of whether or not it’s wise to encourage crowdsourcing for criminal evidence. Axon says its effort isn’t a “fishing expedition,” so your neighbor can’t use this to snitch on your littering habit. This is aimed at specific crimes where there’s already a case. However, there’s a worry that this may spur people to take unnecessary risks, such as doing things that expose them to immediate danger or intimidation. This could help police land convictions they might not otherwise get, but there are plenty of opportunities for unintended consequences.



Companies Cheer Completion of Open-Design Transatlantic Internet Cable

Microsoft on Friday announced completion of the Marea undersea cable, which stretches 4,400 miles between Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Bilbao, Spain.

A joint project of Microsoft, Facebook and global telecommunication infrastructure company Telxius, the cable lies more than 17,000 feet below the ocean’s surface.

It is the first cable to link Virginia and Spain. The Bilbao terminus provides access to network hubs in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Marea is located several miles south of the current connection points between the United States and Europe, for protection against natural disasters or other major disruptive events.

Ahead of Schedule

Its open design will let it evolve with technology and interoperate with a variety of networking equipment.

“The project’s success could set an example for other global communication initiatives to emulate,” said James Scott, senior fellow at the Institute for Critical Infrastructure.

“Its focus is on resilient and reliable connections and on a modular, open design,” he told TechNewsWorld.

Announced in June 2016, Marea was scheduled for completion in early 2018. Its two-year construction is about three times faster than the norm.

Marea provides up to 160 Tbits/sec connectivity and is the highest-capacity subsea transatlantic cable to date.

Transatlantic submarine cables carry 55 percent more data than their transpacific counterparts, and 40 percent more data than between the U.S. and Latin America, according to the Brookings Institute.

Marea’s Impact

Marea will enhance the Microsoft Cloud, said Suresh Kumar, corporate VP, Microsoft cloud infrastructure and operations.

Along with the announcement of Marea’s completion, Microsoft announced Azure Availability Zones, its infrastructure service for resiliency and high availability.

“The more networks in the Internet, the more bandwidth … and the greater the ability to provide higher quality of service,” noted Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research.

Marea makes Microsoft and Facebook “less beholden to other service providers for long-haul bandwidth,” he told TechNewsWorld.

It also could provide both companies with a new form of business and revenue, McGregor said. “Most of the global infrastructure was designed for voice traffic. This project used the latest in technology with the expectation that it’ll be used for many forms of data traffic.”

Telxius’ Role

Telxius, created in February of 2016 by Spanish telecom giant Telefónica, has 15,000 Telefónica towers in various countries, as well as the Telefónica Group’s international network of over 19,000 miles of submarine optic cable.

Telefónica sold up to 40 percent of Telxius to U.S.-based global investment firm KKR Group earlier this year for about 1.5 billion dollars.

The Race to Provide Communications Access

Marea isn’t Microsoft’s first undersea cable venture. Back in 2015, it announced investments in cable projects with Hibernia and Aqua Comms to link its data center infrastructure from North America to Ireland and on to the UK.

Also in 2015, Microsoft joined a consortium building the transpacific New Cross Pacific Cable Network.

In 2014, Google announced participation in the “Faster” transpacific undersea cable project.

Electric Cooperatives Stepping in to Fill the Rural Broadband Gap

DENVER , Sept.� Broadband telecommunications and internet access have become essential infrastructure for any community’s future prosperity. However, today, people living in rural communities are four times more likely to lack access to broadband than those in urban communities.

While many remain without access to broadband today, rural electric cooperatives, some of which were formed nearly 80 years ago to bring electricity to rural America, are increasingly making the move into broadband to fill the supply gap.

A comprehensive 57-page report from CoBank outlines keys to success and lessons learned from six co-ops bringing broadband to their rural customers.  Also, industry experts provide their insights, which will likely prove helpful to other co-ops considering the move.

“This is vital technology that is equally important for rural communities as it is in urban areas. Precision agriculture is hastening a revolution in data usage on the part of American farmers, and increased bandwidth is critical to health care, manufacturing, schools and even tourism in these communities,” said Bill LaDuca , sector vice president for electric distribution, CoBank.

Within this landscape, rural electric co-ops are exploring how their existing distribution networks may lend themselves to highly efficient deployment of broadband.

Many co-ops have found that building out a broadband network using their existing infrastructure is an efficient way to help manage a modern, connected electrical grid as well as a productive way to serve rural customers with high-speed internet either on their own or through a partnership with established telecommunications providers.

“The consultants and co-ops we spoke with to develop our report were very candid in sharing their experiences and challenges,” said LaDuca. “We believe these in-depth interviews can be tremendously helpful to other co-ops evaluating broadband and investigating funding sources. Bridging the data divide is critically important for our rural communities and CoBank is supportive of efforts similar to what these electric co-ops have done for their constituencies.”

Frontier Communications Operations in Florida Return to Near-Normal Levels Thanks to Reliability and Resiliency of FiOS All-Fiber Network

Daily operations for Frontier Communications have returned to near normal levels after Hurricane Irma’s punishing sweep through the company’s six county Florida service area (Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota).

“The resiliency of Frontier’s buried all-fiber network was a significant differentiator in the market,” said Melanie Williams, Frontier’s Senior Vice President for Operations in Florida. “Where power was available, the services of the majority of Frontier’s FiOS-based customers remained operational despite Irma’s impact. Frontier customers who lost power saw their FiOS services automatically restored once electricity was available.”

Frontier’s central office and remote office facilities remained online throughout the storm, either because electricity was available or generator power kicked in, added Williams.

“For customers on our copper network with traditional corded phones, voice service continued to work regardless of power availability,” said Williams.

Frontier’s disaster recovery plan includes damage assessments and getting technicians into the field as soon as conditions allow and emergency management agencies provide the go-ahead. Frontier deployed 630 service technicians into the field as soon as the all-clear was given. This work force continues to address customer issues and new installations daily.

Other storm preparations included activation of Frontier’s Emergency Response Center; equipping fleet vehicles with extra fuel, fluids and lighting; double-checking all safety equipment, ensuring all back-up power supplies and generators are fully operational; ensuring supplies were available for plant and network restoration; and placing emergency network supplies throughout company facilities. On-going communications with employees assured their safety.

“Our network was resilient in the Tampa Bay area, as were our teams on the ground and call centers. I am proud of the level of preparation we put in to be ready for Irma’s impact,” said Williams. “It certainly made a difference.”

Online registration won’t open until November 6, but students of information technology (IT), electronics and communications engineering, computer engineering, computer science, and related courses are encouraged to start thinking of mobile and digital innovations that can improve people’s lives.

The winning team of the 14th SWEEP Awards, which has the theme “#LifeLikeNeverBefore: Digital Innovations for a Better Tomorrow” will get P300,000. The second placer will get P200,000, while the third placer will receive P100,000. Schools of the top three teams will each get a digital campus package from Smart and parent company PLDT.

Interested students aged 17 to 25 should form a team, ideally comprising four members, and think of a wireless application under any of the following categories:

• Consumer – innovations for personal use or for customers or buyers

• Business to Business (B2B) – for government and business transactions

• Social Innovations – covering the fields of education, environment, disaster preparedness and response, health, livelihood, or agriculture

• Big Data – involving big data, social media, and web analytics

• Machine to Machine (M2M) or Internet of Things (IoT) – involving intelligently connected devices and systems

The innovation should use PLDT or Smart’s network connectivity, products, and/or solutions.

Shortlisted teams will be notified via email on January 8, 2018. They can then start working on their prototypes.

Apple TV’s 4K content comes with some major strings attached

There’s a new 4K Apple TV in town, and Apple made it a lot interesting than other 4K products by promising that all your existing HD titles from iTunes will be converted to 4K. That’s a great incentive to buy a device whose main feature is support for 4K content. However, Apple wasn’t entirely honest when advertising the new iTunes feature, leaving out one crucial detail.

Yes, Apple will let you watch 4K versions of your HD movies, but that doesn’t mean you can download them locally and play them whenever you feel like it. 4K content can only be streamed using the Apple TV 4K.

A new Apple support document discovered by MacRumors makes things clear.

“You can download a local copy of an HD movie, and you might be able to download HDR and Dolby Vision versions, but you can’t download a 4K version,” Apple says.

Of course, if you don’t have a minimum internet speed of 25Mbps, then you won’t be able to stream content in 4K either, according to the same document.

It’s unclear why Apple is doing this. Maybe it’s part of the deal with studios, something Apple had to give up during negotiations. What’s also plausible is that storing 4K movies on Apple TV isn’t feasible as long as the box only comes with 32GB or 64GB of storage. 4K content tends to require a lot more storage than a regular movie. Yes, you could download it on a computer and stream it on your Apple TV 4K. But that’s apparently not an option either.

So, before you buy your Apple TV 4K, make sure that you can stream 4K content. If your internet connection isn’t good enough, then you’d probably better settle for the older Apple TV model.
